When did you choose to be gay?
 


When I found out that there was a choice, at first, I was in shock... "whaaat, there's another option????" So first I looked at my friends, saw how easy stuff was for them. Then, I looked at the gay people getting beat up around me and thought "well damn, that's what I want for myself!" ... so I chose gay.

Because I chose to be gay, I spent the first 19 years of my life living in fear.
Because I chose to be gay, my parents hated me after I told them about my choice.
If only I had chosen to take the easy social path, like all you people who chose to be straight.

I've met other people who also chose to be gay, we talk about the moment when we realized there was a choice. Sometimes we talk about when we learned about the gay lifestyle and how it limits our legal capabilities; some of us thought that hospital visitation rights were just silly and petty. Who would want family members who love you, choose gay!!!

But to answer your question: When did I choose to become gay??
It was the same time I realized that gay was an option, because if gay is an option, straight is one too. So while all my other friends were choosing to remain straight, I knew I was a bit different.

I knew I was a bit different very early on: I liked Barbies, I liked theater, I liked looking at the guys in underwear ads. And since I somehow liked all this stuff before I realized there was a choice, it seemed fitting....

.... but wait a minute......

if I liked Barbies and stuff before discovering about the possibility of a choice, then maybe I was gay before the concept of a choice was even considered.....

but if that's true.... that would mean....

that being gay is not a damn choice. It's inherent, kiddo.... just like skin color, eye color, baldness or being straight.

Gays and God

GAYS AND GOD spirituality group begins this summer, hosted by First and Central Presbyterian. Larry Peterson and Doug Gerdts are the facilitators. It is our intention that the group will include anyone from any church or faith system that wishes to explore what it means to be gay and have a relationship with God. We will meet for a planning meeting at First and Central Presbyterian (across from the Hotel DuPont in Wilmington), 7 p.m. on 13 June. At this meeting we will decide our future meeting times, locations, and dates, decide how often we wish to meet, and select our initial series of topics. In our initial couple of meetings, we intend to explore the various scriptures used both to denounce or support homosexuality. Then, we may view one or more documentaries on Christians and Homosexuality. Then, we think we would like to discuss topics within various books that explore what is unique about being gay and spiritual as well as share our own journeys of faith and frustrations. We do have a grant to provide books for participants who are unable to purchase books if we do decide to discuss any particular book as a whole. We do welcome Jewish and Christian folk as well as anyone else who wishes to share our journey. First and Central Presbyterian 1101 N. Colors Meeting (3/23/2012)

We all agree about the importance to bring awareness to many sensitive subjects that affect the GBLTQ community. As we, look to overcome hate crime related offenses, we are also seeking to find ways to educate and be part of a solution in hopes of creating a friendly bond between students, campus faculty members and the general public.

Our goal is to empower our students and teach them that “it will get better”, no matter what challenges “we” are facing, together we can bring fruitful change.

As we begin this journey to bring on change in our campus, we are getting ready to formally introduce our new club “Colors”, to our campus and others interested in attending. In light of spring approaching, it only felt right to name this event: “GBLTQ MIXER”.

LOCATION: 115 Christina Landing Drive Wilmington, DE

One of the two towers on the river front. Just following Market street from town. Take the first left after you go over the bridge. The event will take place in the club house of the first floor.

Tasty Tuesday: Mardi Gras

Fatten yourself up for Fat Tuesday (aka Mardi Gras)


BEIGNETS

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups lukewarm water
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 envelope active dry yeast
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1 1/4 teaspoons salt
1 cup evaporated milk
7 cups bread flour
1/4 cup shortening
Nonstick spray
Oil, for deep-frying
3 cups confectioners' sugar

Directions

Mix water, sugar, and yeast in a large bowl and let sit for 10 minutes.

In another bowl, beat the eggs, salt and evaporated milk together. Mix egg mixture to the yeast mixture. In a separate bowl, measure out the bread flour. Add 3 cups of the flour to the yeast mixture and stir to combine. Add the shortening and continue to stir while adding the remaining flour. Remove dough from the bowl, place onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth. Spray a large bowl with nonstick spray. Put dough into the bowl and cover with plastic wrap or a towel. Let rise in a warm place for at least 2 hours.

Preheat oil in a deep-fryer to 350 degrees F.

Add the confectioners' sugar to a paper or plastic bag and set aside.

Roll the dough out to about 1/4-inch thickness and cut into 1-inch squares. Deep-fry, flipping constantly, until they become a golden color. After beignets are fried, drain them for a few seconds on paper towels, and then toss them into the bag of confectioners' sugar. Hold bag closed and shake to coat evenly.
